The Dutch were not always depicted with respect in Japan. Part of a series about people from foreign countries, this print portrays the king of the Netherlands accompanied by an inscription mocking Dutch handwriting. In Japan, European writing was sometimes compared to the horizontal marks left by crabs scuttling sideways.

Description

Man (Hollander) ten voeten uit, afgebeeld als een Japanse samoerai. Zijn rechterhand leunt op een zwaard; de linker wijst naar rechts. Hoofd met baard, halflang krullen haar een hoofddeksel kijkt naar links. Over zijn schouders een bontmantel. Tekst in Japanse tekens links en rechts van de figuur. Spotvers links boven (gedicht in Japanse tekens). Karikaturaal fantasieportret van koning Willem III.
