Several people could be constrained in foot stocks like these as punishment. Their ankles were clamped in the block to prevent them from fleeing. In Brazil, the same kind of stocks can be found on former plantations. However, this one was found in the province of Zeeland. Such stocks were made in the Dutch Republic and transported by ship to the colony.
