Description

Brandes vervaardigde dit werk toen hij verbleef op de boerderij Vergenoegd: een deel van de boerderij is te zien, namelijk de stenen omheinding en een zonnewijzer. Op de achtergrond zijn de Kaapse bergen (Hottentots Holland Mountains) weergegeven, in het midden is de kloof te zien en de rode aarde van deze doorgang. Uiterst rechts bevindt zich de Valsbaai, helemaal links het plaatsje Stellenbosch (benamingen zijn door Brandes erboven geschreven). Op de voorgrond staan twee boeren te praten, in gezelschap van een hond. Daarachter zijn twee arbeiders weergegeven en links twee figuren op een paard en wagen. Het uitgestrekte vruchtbare landschap, dat door de boerenkolonisten Hottentots Holland werd genoemd, is opgevuld met grazend vee. Links in het landschap zijn ook nog twee boerderijen weergegeven, waarschijnlijk Meerlust en Gedult.
