Wine Glass ‘’t Welvaren van Siparipabo’, anonymous, c. 1725 - c. 1750

glassblowing, h 17.8cm × d 7.1cm More details

Plantation owners in Surinam or Europe would toast to the prosperity of their property with this type of glass. This one was probably commissioned by the owner of the Siparipabo sugar plantation on the Commewijn River in Surinam. The decoration on the glass, featuring a relaxed African man and woman, is in stark contrast to the harsh conditions on the sugar plantations.
