Protected cruisers are armoured down to the waterline, shielding against bullets and grenades. Noord-Brabant, the fifth in a series of six protected cruisers, entered the Dutch fleet in 1900. Its construction was based on that of the British cruiser Apollo. Developments in armoured protection of warships by other countries were closely followed by the Royal Netherlands Navy.
