‘Passengers, sleeping on the deck of a boat of K.V.’ (Koloniale Vaartuigen), Hendrik Doijer, 1903 - 1910
gelatin silver print, h 23.6cm × w 33.1cm More details
Many women coming to Suriname from India travel alone or with their children. The bottom photograph shows a group of indentured labourers asleep on a ship’s deck. The woman in the front left keeps a watchful eye on the photographer. She wears bangles (Indian bracelets) and leans on a gathri, a cotton bundle of belongings. The distinctive box in the middle probably contains the group’s valuables.
