German Soldiers in the De Lairessestraat, Cornelis Pieter Rudolf Holtzapffel, 1944

This photograph of a razzia bleakly evokes the oppressive, continual threat of being arrested on the street. Holtzapffel took it clandestinely from behind a window because photography was prohibited in the final year of the war. The shot became an icon. One month after the Liberation a metre-size print was on view at the exhibition De Ondergedoken Camera (The Underground Camera) and the image was frequently published subsequently.

This work belongs to Foto en collageboek 'De Verborgen Camera' door Tony van Renterghem over de mobilisatie in 1939 en verzet en illegaliteit in de Tweede Wereldoorlog in Nederland (NG-1991-6)
