In 1711 the VOC sent a delegation to India’s most important ruler, the Mughal emperor. Joan Josua Ketelaar, an expert in the Hindustani and the Persian language, was in charge. En route the mission passed through the city of Udaipur and was received by the local ruler. Here Ketelaar and the Indian king sit in a pavilion. For decades to come, Indian painters in Udaipur continued to paint the exotic Dutchmen based on this visit.

Description

Vanuit hoog standpunt buiten de muur gezicht op rechthoekig ommuurd poloveld met groepjes Indiërs. M.b.: verhoogde witte overdekte ontvangstruimte waarin zich 31 Indiërs (waaronder Marahana) en 3 Hollanders bevinden. Johan Ketelaar zit tegenover de konig. Hij draag een zwarte hoed, een rode jas met gouden strepen en groene laarzen of broek. Linsk van Ketelaar staat een bediende tegen een pilaar in een donkerblauw uniform. Links van de ontvangstruimte verhoging met baldakijn erboven. Hier bevinden zich 6 Hollanders en 7 Chinese soldaten in Hollands uniform met piek en 2 Indiërs. Hollanders dragen rode jas, blauwe broek en zwarte hoed. Chinese militairen dragen muts i.p.v. hoed. Onder platform stand in halfronde cirkel: 4 Hollanders en 17 Chinese militairen met piek. Links van hen donkere rookwolken. Rechts van hen (l.m.) vechtende olifanten en rennende olifant achter paarden. Centraal: wit platform met opschrift en met verbrede bovenzijde, hierop bevindt zich een man.

Explanatory note

Met het doel om handelsconcessies te verkrijgen van de Groot-Mogol vertrok in februari 1711 een ambassade van de VOC onder leiding van J.J. Ketelaar vanuit Suratte (West-India) naar het hof van de Groot-Mogol Bahadur Shah, dat zich op dat moment te Lahore (Pakistan) ophield. Op die tocht werd de ambassade buitengewoon gastvrij ontvangen door de vorst van Udaipur, Maharana Sangram Singh II, die zojuist zijn overleden vader Amar Singh (overl. 1710-12-10) als Maharana was opgevolgd. Van deze ontvangst liet de vorst grote schilderingen op doek vervaardigen, waarvan er twee bekend zijn: 1 in Victoria and Albert Museum te Londen en deze.
