This gate, called Herenpoort, was long part of the city of Groningen’s ramparts and fortifications, which were largely dismantled in the 19th century. In 1878, the architect of the Rijksmuseum, Pierre Cuypers, had the gate’s decorative façade transferred to Amsterdam and erected in the museum garden. It was joined to the front of the so-called Bergpoort from Deventer (other side of the present gate).
