Reichsadlerhumpen (Imperial eagle beaker), anonymous, 1649
The coats of arms of the Electors and the Quaterniones Imperii (representatives of the German Empire) have nestled safely under the wings of he Holy Roman Emperor, who watches over them like an eagle. This presented an ideal image, however, for in reality there was little unity in the onflict-ridden empire in the 17th century. At the same time, this made it a popular toasting motif.
