Day Dress, anonymous, 1863 - 1866
From around 1860 the round hoop petticoat (crinoline) was replaced by an oval one with a small bustle or tournure on the buttocks that placed more emphasis on the back. Two techniques were used for the decoration of the gown: part of it is printed, while the white parts of the border were left undyed. The colour, too, is exceptional. The development of synthetic dyes gave rise to a host of new possibilities.
