Full Evening Dress with Ruffles, anonymous, c. 1850 - c. 1856
Dresses consisting of various ruffles (gathered layers of fabric) became fashionable from 1846. The three scalloped ruffles and the boat neck of this dress are decorated with embroidered dots, entirely in keeping with the latest fashion in Paris around 1850. This dress was worn by Margaretha de la Bassecour Caan, as was the striped similarly styled gown in Gallery 4.
