Inkstand with the coats of arms of Leiden, Delft and William III, anonymous, c. 1670 - c. 1680
This inkstand was made for the Orangist Jan Knotter, a bargeman who was granted the right to navigate between Leiden and Delft in 1675. The arms of Leiden and Delft held up by lions, and the water landscape on the back allude to the barge service, and the inscription and the arms of William III to Knotter’s political loyalties.
