Ewer and basin, De Grieksche A, c. 1701 - c. 1722
The form of this set with ribbed borders was popular and used by various Delft potteries. The colours are inspired by a kind of Japanese porcelain that the Dutch called Imari, after the Japanese port of the same name. Imitating Imari was a speciality of the De Grieksche A factory, where Jannetje van der Heul stipulated that her painters should leave ‘especially the art of painting and firing in gold’ for her alone to do.
