Fitted Gown (robe ajustée), anonymous, c. 1750
silk, More details
In the 18th century gowns fitted at the back of the body were called robe ajustée. The striking pattern of the fabric – playfully arranged exotic plants and tiny buildings – was fashionable in the 1730s and 40s. The sharply pleated form of the cuffs is typical of the first half of this century.
