The pochette is a violin with a narrow body. Its name comes from the dancing masters’ habit of putting these small violins into their pockets while giving lessons, as they needed their hands free to explain dance steps to their pupils. Pochettes were made in a number of shapes. The one on display here is a particularly graceful example.
