The flourishing of civic militia companies testifies to the growing power of ordinary citizens. Each guild had its own building, the doelen. This chair stood in the doelen of a guild of crossbowmen, as can be seen from the crossbow depicted on its back. From which town it came is unknown. The patron saint of crossbowmen was Saint George.
