Wine Glass with a Portrait of William V, anonymous, 1787

Wine Glass with a Portrait of William V, anonymous, 1787

stipple engraving, h 15.6cm × d 8.1cm More details

This portrait was created by means of the stipple engraving technique. The engraver used a diamond point to mark the glass with tiny dots. Those placed further apart produce a darker shade, while those placed closer together yield lighter ones. The depth this method could suggest made it particularly suitable for the realistic-looking portraits that were engraved on glass in the second half of the 18th century.
