Pilgrim bottle with the arms of France, anonymous, 1665

Pilgrim bottle with the arms of France, anonymous, 1665

turning, h c.28cm More details

Westerwald stoneware is recognizable by its decoration of cobalt blue on grey. Unusual features of this bottle are the fleurs-de-lys and the dark violet in the coat of arms. This colour, derived from added manganic oxide, first came into use during the mid-17th century. The lily motifs around the arms of France on the body suggest that the bottle was made for the French market.
