Fragment of a woven fabric, anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1720
silk, gold thread, h 63.5cm × w 24cm More details
The patterns of textiles woven in Amsterdam generally sprang from the weaver’s imagination and were based only loosely on Asian models. Chinese elements such as painted scrolls and a pagoda-like structure can be discerned in this fragment. Above all, the fabric had to have an exotic allure.
