Ciborium, Mathieu Lauweriks, 1912 - 1916

silver (metal), h 35.5cm × d 9cm More details

This ciborium – a vessel used in Christian worship for the consecrated bread – depicts the interaction between man and the universe with pentagons, triangles andspirals. Lauweriks was following the Theosophical tenet that every philosophy of life contains a fragment of the divine mystery. Lauweriks therefore chose opals, which reflect light in a thousand colours; as many as there are human interpretations of the divine.
