Prototype for a Communion Service, Carel Begeer, 1927
This set of liturgical vessels is one of the earliest expressions of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement in silver. The clearcut architectural design is one that is pared to the bone and inspired entirely by the possibilities of the machine. The stacked cylindrical shapes were manufactured in the same way as shell casings. The stacked, folded plate decorations made can only be produced by a machine.
