Box with the Coat of Arms of Joan van Hoorn, anonymous, c. 1700 - c. 1710
This lacquer box is decorated with traditional Japanese motifs and the coat of arms of Governor General Joan van Hoorn. On his return trip to the Netherlands in 1709, he took a huge load of household goods with him, including this box. Some enslaved servants accompanied him in order to look after his needs during the journey. However, they were not allowed to stay: upon arriving in the Netherlands, they were immediately shipped back to Batavia.
