Around 1900 the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts (Kunstgewerbeschule) was one of the leading institutions for training in the decorative arts. Designers such as Otto Wagner, Josef Hoffmann, and Koloman Moser taught there. A student may have made this vase as his ‘masterpiece’; it is as bold as it is elegant. The metallic sheen of the undulating lines in the glass in combination with the brass mount is quite unusual.
