Description

Een gebogen, rechthoekig ivoren plaatje (deel van een olifantstand) dat aan de buitenzijde is voorzien van een en voorstelling van de Doop in de Jordaan onder een Gotische arcade, steunend op twee zuiltjes, die aan weerszijden de voorstelling begrenzen. Tussen Johannes de Doper en Jezus is een niet geidentificeerd wapenschild, dat mogelijk behoord heeft tot een broederschap of klooster.

Explanatory note

De schenking is gedaan omdat dit relief het directe voorbeeld lijkt te zijn geweest voor een terracotta mal en afdruk in onze collectie (BK-2010-9-1,2). Daarmee is dit werk van groot belang als bewijsstuk voor de overdracht van hoge kunst naar lagere, massa geproduceerde kunstwerken in de late Middeleeuwen. Bovendien biedt het een sterke aanwijzing dat dit ivoor en de groep waartoe het stilistisch gerekend wordt en waarvan het Rijksmuseum enkele andere voorbeelden bezit ook in de Nederlanden is vervaardigd. Het wapenschild in het ivoor is duidelijk weggesneden uit de mal, toen de klei nog niet geheel droog was.
