In the Middle Ages many cheap, simple religious items were produced, such as this terracotta pax. The mould was created directly from the costly ivory pax adjacent. While the scene of the baptism of Christ is an exact copy, the heraldic shield is omitted. This group of three objects shows how luxury works of art inspired cheap serial products.
