This colourful necklace appears to be made of fabric, yet nothing could be further from the truth. The artist cut squares out of coloured plastic bags and strung them together. From the 1980s onwards, jewellery designers increasingly used plastic. The material was relatively cheap, easy to shape, and available in an endless array of colours.
