Armchair, Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin, c. 1840
A.W.N. Pugin was one of the most important designers of the English Gothic Revival, which became the leading style throughout Europe. This chair is a variation on a design created by Pugin for Scarisbrick Hall in Lancashire. The remodelling and refurbishment of this house was one of the first commissions that allowed the designer to apply his Gothic Revival style on a large scale.
