Dish with an angel, anonymous, c. 1640 - c. 1660

earthenware, h c.6.5cm × d c.49cm More details

At centre of this dish is an angel holding a globe. The rest of the dish is decorated with grotesques. These fanciful decorations based on human, animal and plant forms became popular during the Italian Renaissance. The Haarlem maker had probably seen them on maiolica from Tuscany and Urbino, which had come to the Netherlands through the international trade.
