Plaque with the Battle of the Amazons, Manufacture Oud-Loosdrecht, after Gaspard Duchange, c. 1778 - c. 1782
Painted porcelain plaques fired together with their frames are rare. While they occur with some frequency in earthenware, only a very few porcelain factories produced these kinds of little ‘paintings’. This depiction is based on a painting by Peter Paul Rubens. It is a spectacular jumble of fighting female warriors (the Amazons) and Greek soldiers under the command of Theseus.
