Charger with the Conversion of Saul, Jan Bogaert (possibly), 1550
This Antwerp charger would originally have been some 50 cm in diameter. When the rim around the central scene was damaged, it was removed and replaced by a brass mount. Such a dish would never have been used for eating, but would have been displayed on a wall as a painting in ceramic. The absence of the rim now reinforces the dish’s resemblance to a painting.
