Necklace, Firma W. Vinke Larsen, c. 1864
In the 19th century, jewellery fashioned of gold and human hair was highly valued for its personal character. A note accompanying this necklace states that the hair in it belonged to H.M.A.F. Teding van Berkhout-van Slingeland and to her youngest child, Ferdinand, who died in 1854. The family relied on the services of a leading professional hair worker.
