Depicted here is a passage from the biblical book Revelation, which recounts that the archangel Michael slew Evil, disguised as a dragon-man, with a flaming sword. In the 17th century this representation was a popular symbol of the triumphant Catholic Church in its struggle against ‘heretical’ Protestantism.
