The shape of these chairs was common in the Neoclassical period in the Netherlands. At that time, it was usual for the decoration to be carved on the chair. In the case of these four chairs, however, the decoration is carried out in marquetry. This suggests that they were not made by a chairmaker, but rather by a cabinetmaker, who usually made cabinets, commodes and other such furniture.
