The Lamentation of Christ, anonymous, c. 1440 - c. 1450
The lifeless body of Christ rests on the lap of his mother Mary. She is surrounded by a group of faithful followers, including the Apostle John at the left behind her. The sculptural ensemble was part of a large, now lost Passion altarpiece from the Southern Netherlands. Typically, sculptures from that area were made of walnut and featured a dramatic emotionalism.
