French soldiers in the North African colonies adopted this traditional local cape for its functional use. In the mid-19th century this burnous gave rise to a new fashion in women’s coats named after the original. They were decorated with fringes and tassels and generally had a hood. Besides being called burnous, these capes were also known as a bedouïne or Talma.
