The Fishermen, Manufacture Royale des Gobelins, c. 1692 - c. 1723
The hunter and fishermen depicted here reference the original inhabitants of the Amazon region. In the centre is a woman of African descent. All of the figures are depicted as stereotypes. This tapestry is part of a commissioned series designed for Johan Maurits, who served as governor of the former Dutch Brazil. Upon returning home, he decorated his Mauritshuis with them. He donated the designs to the French king Louis XIV.
