Ebony furniture with large floral motifs in relief was all the fashion in Batavia in the second half of the seventeenth century. At first these pieces were made in India and imported to Batavia. Later, they were also made in Batavia, often by Indian woodcarvers. The shape of the bed, with its four posts, is European. An insect net was draped over the rail.
