These two centaurs –mythological creatures that are half-man and half-horse –are reduced copies of antique bronze statues that were excavated in Rome in 1736. The originals are in the Capitoline Museum in Rome.

Description

De centaur gaat stapvoets met opgeheven rechtervoorbeen en met op de rug gebonden polsen. Hij wendt zijn bovenlijf om met her hoofd boven de rechterschouder en werpt de blik naar achteren. Het hoofd vertoont krullend haar, een baardje en spitse oren. Over de linkerschouder hangt de huid van een roofdier, waarvan de staart over de paardenromp ligt. De staart can de centaur slaat tegen de rechterflank, de borst is behaard, in de holte van de rug een pluk haar. Tussen de poten ligt een paar castagnetten aan een riem. Met bijbehorend ovaal voetstuk.
