Case for the centrepiece of Wenzel Jamnitzer, anonymous, 1549
This leather case was specially made for the large centrepiece by Nuremberg silversmith Wenzel Jamnitzer (on display in Gallery 2.3). That silver-gilt showpiece is shaped like a high-footed bowl surmounted by a vase. The table ornament was kept in a dedicated area of the treasury of the town hall of Nuremburg. The case was opened only on rare occasions for particularly high-ranking guests.
