Wine glass with Portraits of William V and Wilhelmina of Prussia, anonymous, c. 1790
Affluent citizens raised toasts to their political heroes with beautifully engraved drinking glasses. Orangists had glasses with portraits of Stadholder Prince William V and his consort, Wilhelmina of Prussia, while Dutch Patriots drank to the health of the Amsterdam burgomaster Hooft or famous figures from the past, such as the 17th-century statesman Johan van Oldenbarnevelt who had rebelled against Prince Maurice.
