In the 18th century lacemaking techniques were so advanced that lacemakers could produce virtually any conceivable pattern. They based their work no longer exclusively on pattern books with special lace motifs, but also derived inspiration from ornament prints. Chinoiseries, imaginary depictions with little Chinese figures, thus made their entrée in lace.
