Charger, anonymous, 1718

platter, h 5.8cm × d 38.7cm More details

inscribed: ‘Anno 1718 Den 12/11; G: Nahuys’ The decor and the inscription on the back of this charger make it an exceptional object. It is decorated entirely in the style of the earliest Chinese porcelain brought back to the Netherlands by the VOC, which was already somewhat old-fashioned by 1718. As the inscription relates, the charger was made for Gerardus Nahuys, probably by his housemate Anthonij van der Kloet, the brand-new owner of De Drie Vergulde Astonne pottery.
