Until the late 17th century all porcelain ware had blue decorations, which were painted directly onto the unfired porcelain. This dish, however, also has other colours, applied with enamel: molten glass paste fused with the porcelain during firing. The blue of the dish’s border was applied in powder form, giving it a dappled, somewhat uneven appearance (an effect known as ‘powder blue’).
