Dish depicting a goddess and a scholar, anonymous, c. 1635 - c. 1645
The woman’s divinity is indicated by the cloud on which she floats. She carries a child on her arm and meets a scholar on the bridge depicted here. Various celestial women are associated with children; and, with getting through the civil service examination. As appreciation for good deeds, the celestial women help scholars to pass that exam, a critical moment in the scholars’ lives.
