This ewer is decorated in blue underglaze with a man on a raft, portraying the diplomat and explorer Zhang Qian (c. 195-114 BCE) from the Han dynasty (206 BCE–220 CE). He was reputed to have gone in search of the Yellow River on a raft, ultimately travelling as far as the Milky Way.
