Men’s Under-Kimono, anonymous, 1940

painting, h 130cm × w 129cm More details

Japanese men’s attire includes an under-kimono that remains invisible when worn. The decoration reflects the owner’s personal preferences. The combination of symbols on this one, a family crest consisting of rectangles and a langoustine, refers to a famous actor from the Kabuki theatre. A display of Japanese men’s kimonos is on view downstairs in the Asian Pavilion.
