Set of three women’s kimonos decorated with cranes, anonymous, 1920 - 1940
Unmarried women wore kimonos with wide hanging sleeves (furisode). Both the outer kimono and two under kimonos in this exceptionally formal set are richly decorated, despite the latter ones being hidden from sight when worn. They are hand painted in fine colours, in soft gradations. There is embroidery on the head and wings of the birds, and the rough waves are rendered with splashes of paint.
