Dance kimono for a geisha, anonymous, 1920 - 1940

painting, h 202cm × w 127cm More details

Geishas (female entertainers) wore this kind of long kimono to dance in. The water motifs are well-suited to the flowing movements of the dancer. Together with the maple leaves, they refer to the Tatsuta River, where in the autumn the leaves float on the water like coloured brocade.
