The irotomesode was a slightly less formal garment with a coloured background, worn on festive occasions. Yuzen dyeing was considered a suitable decoration for all formal clothing. Motifs were outlined in rice paste and coloured in, then the decorations were covered entirely with rice paste and the fabric was soaked in a dye bath to create the background colour.
